WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT: THE SARDINIA EXPERIENCE IS CONVINCING BULGARIA

October 2008

Last 11 October CAE met in Cagliari (Sardinia) a delegation of the Government of Bulgaria, led by the Minister of Agriculture Mr. Valery Svetanov, visiting the island accepting an invitation of Prof. Sergio Vacca, President of the Sardinia Institution for Water Management – ENAS.
Main purpose for this visit was to know the new automatic hydro-meteorological and water quality monitoring system recently installed by CAE, to monitor most of ENAS’ managed artificial lakes in Sardinia.
“The result of this advanced application” – explained Prof. Vacca – “are fully satisfactory. The system started its operation transmitting data a few moments after the installation, and there since we are able to receive even more that 99% of recorded data in a very reliable way. Finally, it proved to be an indispensable instrument to optimize the full cycle of water management, in line with the commitment taken by ENAS with the Region of Sardinia”.
During the meeting, Prof. Vacca personally illustrated the Minister and the technical delegation accompanying him in this visit, the mode of operation and performance of the CAE system, showing its essential contribution for ENAS to save important economic resources by strongly reducing the use of chemicals in water treatment, improving the performance of plants and reducing contamination.
The Delegation also visited the site of Flumendosa, one of the most important artificial basin in Sardinia, where CAE is currently installing a new monitoring system.
During his speech, the Minister expressed high interest for this CAE developed technology and the important improvements achieved through it by ENAS in the management of water resources. “ENAS initiative” - commented Dr. Svetanov -  for the establishment of a real time network to monitor hydrological, meteorological and water quality conditions in artificial basins, whose waters are mainly devoted to human consumption, is an example we have to follow, also considering the huge gap that Bulgaria has to fill to reach similar standards”.
To confirm this interest, Dr. Svetanov invited a CAE mission to visit Bulgaria as soon as possible, for a joint evaluation about possibilities of replicating the Sardinia’s experience in his Country.
