Biography of Pedrini

September 2025

CAE has produced a biography that describes private and professional events in Pedrini's life, from his youth in Parma to his working successes around the world, told by those who shared part of the journey with him: family, friends and lifelong collaborators.

His personal story is intertwined with the national history of hydrogeological risk mitigation and with that of CAE, a company of which Giancarlo was a founding partner, and that he helped grow while working as acting Vice President until he unfortunately passed away on 13 April 2020.

The work of Andrea Grechi, who edited it, has resulted in a text full of anecdotes that begin before the birth of CAE, back in 1977, with the first real-time hydro-meteorological monitoring networks, passing through the Valtellina flood, the Sarno and Quindici tragedies and the consequent creation of the Civil Protection Functional Centres, up to the great technological modernisations he promoted in Vietnam.

It is precisely in this country, with which Giancarlo had a special bond, that we find the Nguyet Bieu orphanage, run by 16 Catholic nuns aided by volunteers, where today an entire new building has been named in his memory. The project was initiated by the Rotary Club of Poggio Renatico, led at the time by President Daniele Masetti, and is financially supported by Rotary District 2072, with significant contributions from many of Giancarlo's friends.

In the preface, written by Guido Bernardi, current President of CAE S.p.A., you can read the spirit of this initiative: “On the one hand, I was certain that the many moments the leader Giancarlo shared with all of us would remain indelible, an integral part of our history; on the other, I had the desire to allow those who had known him too little, or not at all, to appreciate the person. I felt that the story of Giancarlo, who I knew best from a work perspective, and who I could only imagine from a friendship perspective, deserved to be known.”
